Fun Fall Activities in the Lakes Region

The leaves are changing, children are back in school, and there is a distinct crispness to the morning air. While the summer of 2015 was great in the Lakes Region, the signs are clear: it's winding down.

Fortunately, fall in northern New England is absolutely beautiful and New Hampshire's Lakes Region provides some excellent opportunities to take advantage of everything this picturesque season has to offer. Here are a few of our favorite fall activities in the area:

Castle In The Clouds

Completed in 1914, the magnificent Lucknow Estate in Moultonborough, NH, overlooks Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding towns from a mountaintop perch. This "castle" was originally built as a vacation home for millionaire Tom Lucknow his wife Olive. The couple's estate remains preserved as a beautiful historical landmark, allowing visitors to explore what life was like in this mountain home over 100 years ago - highlights of the tour include secret, hidden rooms and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and lakes.

Castle in the Clouds also features an art gallery, gift shop and The Carriage House Restaurant which offers lunch-goers a delicious selection of affordable, classic American-style cuisine.

Locals Tip: If you're feeling adventurous, consider hiking nearby Bald Knob (sometimes called Bald Peak). This moderate hike takes approximately 35-45 minutes to get to the summit, and once you're there, look to the west - you'll see a truly unique, cross-mountain view of the Castle In The Clouds. Located less than two miles east on NH 171 from The Castle In The Clouds entrance, the Bald Knob trailhead is marked by the Welcome to Moultonborough sign.

NH Fairs and Festivals

Town fairs and local festivals are a New England classic in the fall. Here are two of our favorites in the Lakes Region:

The Sandwich Fair
The Sandwich Fair epitomizes what is so great about this season - beautiful foliage, warm apple cider, farm animal exhibitions, and games and rides for the whole family.

Date: Saturday, October 10 - Monday, October 12, 2015
Location: Sandwich Fairgrounds, Center Sandwich, NH
Tickets: $10 for adults, ages 8-12 are $3 and children under 7 are free

NH's 25th Anniversary Pumpkin Festival
While the Laconia Pumpkin Festival is always great fun, this year's event is even more special - participants will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for most jack-o-lanterns lit in one place - wow! In addition to this potentially record-breaking feat, the Pumpkin Festival offers a 5K road race, costume parade, pumpkin bowling and delicious fall food.

Date: Saturday, October 24, 2015
Location: Downtown Laconia, NH
Tickets: This is a free event
