Tax Abatemnt Deadlines
The dates for filing and response times are as follows:
March 1st is the date by which you must have an application into the assessors or selectman for an abatement. The town or city you live in will provide you with the proper application.
The municipality then has until July 1st to act upon your request, unless it's a re-evaluation year in which a municipality has more than 9,000 parcels when those municipalities have until September 1st. If you do not get a response by those dates, it is in effect a denial. Isn't it great how government gets to act like this. If we didn't not respond in time we would be denied, but if they do not respond they still win.
If you do not recieve an abatement your next step is to go to Superior Court if you so choose and the deadline is September 1st if your town had until July 1st to respond and if it had until September 1st then you have until November 1st. However, if you miss any of the deadlines, by even a day, you will lose the right to appeal the tax for that year and have to wait until next. You cannot go backwards, only appeal the current assessment.
Good luck and don't hesitate to contact us should you have any further questions!
